Download PDF version
This Heads Up Display (HUD) is manufactured by Flight Visions Incorporated (FVI), a division of CMC Electronics, and retrofitted into US Navy F-14 aircraft by Northrop Grumman (NG).
Challenge
- Reverse engineer existing HUD components for use in new design.
- Fit package of new Optics Electronics into existing airframe while meeting current Navy specs.
- Rapid development schedule. Design and manufacture
- Functional testing prototypes in less than one year.
Development
- DiMonte Group Inc. reverse engineered parts of the existing HUD from old drawings and parts salvaged from wrecks. Combining these models with new design components from NG and FVI engineers, we created a 3D assembly of the design, and a document package for review by Navy Engineering's "Preliminary Design Review."
Rapid Prototype
- Utilizing salvaged parts and rapid prototyping processes, a functioning prototype was fitted to an air frame, for "Critical Design Review".
Design for Manufacture
- DiMonte Group Inc. worked with FVI suppliers to complete the design and manufacturing details. FVI suppliers worked from our 3D CAD database to build components for flight-testing units, while we completed documentation required for 1st article inspection and FVI's manufacturingprocess
